Family Medicine Fontana - Curriculum
Goals & Objectives
The Kaiser Permanente Fontana Family Medicine Residency has a simple goal to train outstanding family physicians. The training program has an integrated curriculum based on four pillars.
Ambulatory Care
- High patient volume patient with excellent exposure to pediatrics, gynecology, and adult medicine in Family Medicine clinic (FMC)
- Residents actively manage their own patient panel
- Team-based care for diabetes, hypertension, and lipid management
- Sports Medicine fellowship is located on site, with immediate “curbside” consultation available
Academics
- Based in a state of the art, tertiary care teaching hospital
- Noon teaching conferences covering diverse family medicine topics
- Longitudinal behavioral medicine program with weekly teaching conference
- One-on-one teaching in all clinical settings
- Research supported both locally and regionally with grant funding available
Procedures
- Exposure to common ambulatory minor procedures throughout residency
- Dermatology clinics with minor procedures included in FMC
- Gynecologic procedures clinics in FMC
- Training in joint injections in Sports Medicine clinic as well as FMC
- Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum
- Training in vasectomies is available. The Family Medicine department performs all vasectomies for the medical center

- Biopsychosocial model of family care integrated into all rotations
- Patient centered care in a family context
- Family Circles and genograms as tools to understand family systems

Behavioral Medicine
- Family systems and behavioral training integrated in outpatient and inpatient rotations
- Longitudinal behavioral training
o Year long, half day a week training
o Didactic lectures covering all major behavioral science topics, including medication management, counseling skills, etc.
o Experience in primary care counseling of basic family medicine issues, such as depression, anxiety, grief, life cycle issues, etc.
o Experience training in medication management when appropriate
o Taught by family physicians, psychiatrists, and various behaviorists
