Internal Medicine Inland Empire - FAQs
1) Do you follow an X+Y or traditional scheduling pattern?
Our residents have their continuity clinic during off-ward months during the PGY1 year. (clinic during non-ward months only)
In the PGY2 and 3 years, continuity clinic scheduling moves to a half day a week (both ward and non-ward) to help facilitate resident bonding with their clinic panels.
2) How are rotations divided among the different clinical sites?
Generally, 60% of rotations are hosted at Fontana Medical center, 35% at Riverside Medical Center, and 5% at Ontario Medical Center. We strive to minimize travel between sites, although on some rare occasions travel is necessary due to protected didactics or important clinic sessions.
We assign residents at the beginning of training to either Fontana or Riverside continuity clinic. Their ambulatory rotations will generally follow where their continuity clinic is assigned.
3) What opportunities exist for those pursuing fellowship?
Our program strives to match each resident with the mentors and research that will best dovetail with each resident’s career path. As residents clarify their intention to pursue fellowship, we help connect them to the appropriate mentors and departments to optimize their success. Residents that are focused and intentional about pursuing fellowship have consistently matched to their specialty of choice.
4) What are some unique aspects of training at a Kaiser Permanente program?
Internal Medicine at Kaiser Permanente combines Evidence Based Medicine with the structure of a focused healthcare system to provide high quality care. Residents are primarily focused on making solid diagnostic and management plans, with the support of case managers, pharmacists, and ancillary staff that are well positioned to help deliver a cohesive care plan. We place an emphasis on preventive medicine and achieving a high level of care quality by leveraging the connectedness of our hospitals and clinics, and the robust Electronic Medical Record.
In a healthcare environment that will need leaders cognizant of how to optimize quality and accessibility, Kaiser Permanente’s uniqueness is to optimize the health of populations while reducing waste and time-consuming insurance hassles.
5) What elective experiences will I have?
Residents have 4 unrestricted blocks of electives through their 3 years of training.
IM subspecialty blocks are chosen by residents based on their career interests.
6) What is the size and culture of the program like?
As a program of 27 total residents, residents commonly view the residency as their work family. Our Wednesday afternoon academic half day often gives way to organic conversations and resident connectivity that can be inviting and communal. We hope that you will have an opportunity to connect with us, either at our virtual happy hours or our optional in person second looks.
