Why Kaiser?

I’ve been working at KP since 2011, though I’ve been a member since I was 4 as I grew up in Southern California. I believe that our ability to practice high quality medicine independently along with connection to primary care and specialists in our integrated system offers our patients the best treatment outcomes. In addition, our unique residency and fellowship programs allow us variety in our work week including time for teaching, mentorship, research and administrative duties that I am invigorated by. I also serve as the co-chair for our KP regional psychiatry symposium.

I am married and have 2 children that I had during residency and fellowship. I enjoy fantasy and horror and love to travel.

Why Kaiser?

I’ve been working at KP since 2013, I joined straight out of fellowship. Initially life circumstances landed me at KP – My husband matched at the family medicine program here and I needed a stable job to move across the country to with our then 2 children. Now I can’t imagine being anywhere else. Our integrated system, physician leadership top to bottom, opportunities for patient care, system improvement, leadership and administration as well as teaching makes this the best of all worlds. I love the people that I work with and I love the mission of our medical group and our organization and being a part of creating the answer to healthcare and mental health care in America.

I am married and have 3 children. I had my girls during residency and fellowship and my son after I started working at KP. My husband is also a physician (family medicine and sports medicine) so I understand the world of a dual physician couple. I love baking, running, weight training, spending time with my family, Movies, Pop Culture and watching crime shows.

Why Kaiser?

I joined KP in 2018 directly out of fellowship. I knew I wanted to join a practice that was involved with psychiatry training and teaching opportunities as well as the opportunity to continue my passion for addressing healthcare inequities in the LGBT+ population and increasing physician education around Transgender healthcare. I work with both the General Adult Residency during Child and Adolescent Clinic supervision as well as give lectures on Research Literacy / Methods and Gender Health as well as working with the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship as the Pediatric Consult Liaison Attending at the Fontana Medical Center, outpatient clinic supervisor, and provide various lectures for CAP didactics. Currently, I serve as the San Bernardino Psychiatry Coding and Billing Champion as well as sit on the Regional Committee on Transgender Health.

Dr. Mortillaro was born and raised in New Orleans, LA where he previously competed for USA Gymnastics as a professional gymnast prior to pursuing his medical education. He stayed in New Orleans to complete his college and medical schooling at Tulane University before moving to Boston to complete his residency and fellowship with Harvard Medical School at the Harvard South Shore and Boston Children’s Hospital programs, respectively. Throughout his education, Dr. Mortillaro has had the opportunity to spearhead development of LGBT+ focused educational initiatives and research aimed to reduce the health disparities for this patient population. Currently, Dr. Mortillaro is a partner physician in the Kaiser Permanente Healthcare System in Southern CA where he serves as assistant chief of psychiatry, core faculty for the residency and fellowship programs, and an associate clinical professor at the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. Clinically, Dr. Mortillaro sees a wide variety of patients in the pediatric consultation service as well as his general mental health and adult autism outpatient clinics. When not seeing patients, Dr. Mortillaro is a member of AACAP’s media committee and chairs a Kaiser Permanente national initiative aimed at reducing mental health stigma in the video game community. His research interests are varied but his particular focuses include large scale database mining studies, borderline personality disorder, and the interface of media and mental health. In his spare time, Dr. Mortillaro enjoys spending time with his husband and two dogs as well as traveling and playing volleyball.

Neuro psycho immunology, Psychosis, Teaching, Psychotherapies (especially Positive Psychology and Existential Psychotherapy).

Why Kaiser?

I have worked as an inpatient psychiatrist for 10 years prior to joining KP. Some of my patients on the inpatient unit at Loma Linda had Kaiser insurance; I became more and more impressed with the resources that KP was offering them especially when comparing it to other insurances, commercial or otherwise. The more I learned about KP the more I realized that I wanted to be part of a system that combines good medicine with good business, that works efficiently and is integrative. I joined KP in 2018 and I find the outpatient work to be meaningful and rewarding.

I am married, our son is 10 years old. He is very inquisitive and I love to watch his mind expand. I like traveling, unexpected adventures, hiking, the beach, movies, podcasts, good conversations, good books.

Why Kaiser?

As a psychologist, you can choose to work wherever you like- in research, in teaching, in clinical work. Kaiser allowed me to work in all of these areas at the same time and with colleagues I found to be incredibly well- trained, concerned with the best interest of patients, and enjoyable people with whom to spend my days!

I have two children, one in middle school and one in high school. When I’m not at work I spend a lot of time driving to soccer games and dance practice or taking walks with my twin sister. I like to cook, I have a big garden, and I have a secret weakness for post-apocalyptic fiction.
