  • Dr. Shen earned his medical degree (MD) from China Medical University (nee College) in Taiwan in 1988. He immigrated to the US in 1989 and earned a Master of Science (MS) degree in Anatomy and Cell Biology from USC in 1991. He completed Internal Medicine internship & residency training at LAC-USC (1994), followed by Cardiovascular Diseases (1997) and Interventional Cardiology (1998) fellowship training at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center (LAMC).
  • Dr. Shen joined the LAMC faculty in 1999 upon completing fellowship training. He was the medical director of the 32 bed CCU for over a decade beginning in 2001. He served as the Assistant CVD Fellowship Program Director 2001-4, and then as Program Director 2004-17 for 2 six-year terms as PD. He was voted Best Teacher by the LAMC CVD fellowship class of 2002. He received both the 2008 Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG) Faculty of the Year Award and the 2008 SCPMG Researcher of the Year Award, the highest teaching and clinical research recognitions within the entire KP So Cal region, respectively.
  • In 2012, Dr. Shen was appointed Chief of Cardiology and continues to practice both general and interventional cardiology.
  • Dr. Shen is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA. His research interests are in atrial fibrillation epidemiology and racial/ethnic disparities in the treatments and outcomes of anticoagulation therapy for stroke prevention. He served as the Area Research Chairman for LAMC 2008-13, with overall responsibility for all research activities at the KP LAMC. He has co-authored ~30 peer-reviewed manuscripts (published in JAMA, Lancet, JACC, Stroke, Archives of Dermatology, AJC, etc) and 60+ abstracts presented at national (e.g., ACC, AHA, TCT) and international (e.g., CardioStim) conferences. He serves as peer reviewer/editorial board member/consultant for ~30 indexed medical journals covering a broad range of disciplines (e.g., Circulation, Circ A&E, JTH, European J of Neurology, European J of Echo, Rheumatology, etc). Dr. Shen has been co-investigator on studies funded by the NIH as well as private foundations and served as Chairman of the annual national Kaiser Cardiovascular Symposium (COAST) from 2005-2017.

  • Dr. Sanchez earned his BS from Yale University in 2000 and then taught bilingual middle school science in Los Angeles for 2 years. He earned his MD from Stanford University in 2007, and then completed his Internal Medicine residency in 2010, Cardiology fellowship in 2013, and Adult Congenital Heart Disease fellowship in 2015, all at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
  • Upon completion of his training, Dr. Sanchez was Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA and worked as a general cardiologist at the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center for 3 years. During this time he was Director of the Echocardiography Lab and became Associate Program Director of the UCLA-Olive View-Greater Los Angeles VA program in 2016. He was given the first annual teaching award for “Outstanding Sub-Specialist Attending” in 2016, as voted on by the housestaff. Concurrently, Dr. Sanchez was the Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at Loma Linda University from 2015-2016, and attended weekly clinic there. Dr. Sanchez joined Kaiser LAMC as the Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program in 2017.

  • Dr. Brar joined the LAMC faculty upon completion of fellowship training in 2009. He also serves as LAMC Director of Vascular & Endovascular Medicine and performs percutaneous peripheral vascular, structural, and coronary interventions. He also performs complex aortic interventions such as thoracic endovascular aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection repair. In 2018, Dr. Brar assumed the role of Director of the Regional Cardiac catheterization Laboratory and as the Program Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program.
  • Dr. Brar is the author of 100+ original research manuscripts, meta-analyses, review articles, editorials, and abstracts. Dr. Brar has expertise in designing, conducting, and reporting clinical trials and has given multiple “late breaking” clinical trial presentations at major scientific meetings. He is the senior author for publications in leading journals including the Lancet and JAMA.
  • Dr. Brar is a reviewer/editorial consultant for 40+ medical journals, including the Lancet, JAMA, JACC, EHJ, Circulation, and serves as a member of the editorial board for 10+ journals. He is currently serving as an Associate Director for Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics, the largest national interventional cardiology meeting, and has served as faculty for various meetings including the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Scientific Sessions, and the Society of Cardiac Angiography & Interventions. He is also serving on the research & publications committee for the ACC’s CathPCI registry that is part of the National Cardiovascular Data Registry, and is one of the authors drafting CathSAP5, the ACC’s premier educational resource for Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Brar was the Chair of the Regional Research Committee for Kaiser Permanente Southern California until 2017, a role in which he was in charge of overseeing the administration of >$500,000 in research grants annually, developed educational programs to promote clinical research, and assisted investigators with protocol and analytic plan development throughout the Southern California region. Dr. Brar also serves on the regional Medical Technology Assessment Team, evaluating novel and cutting edge therapies for use in Kaiser Permanente Southern California, and is a member of the Institutional Review Board.     Other: Dr. Gupta received his MD degree from University of California, Irvine and then completed Internal Medicine residency training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He then completed CVD fellowship training at LAMC in 2004, followed by Electrophysiology fellowship training at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He then returned to join our faculty, serving as Regional EP Director since 2006. He is board certified in Cardiology and CCEP. He is Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA and an abstract grader for the Heart Rhythm Society Scientific Sessions as well as American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions. His research interests are in all aspects of Clinical Electrophysiology leveraging both the large volumes of implantable devices as consultant to the Kaiser Permanente Cardiac Device Registry (KP-CDR) as well as large volumes of both basic and complex ablation procedures. He is also the local Principal Investigator on multiple large industry sponsored IDE trials with leading patient enrollment in many of them. His administrative and clinical interests as director are broad and cover all aspects electrophysiology care and delivery for KP patients in all of Southern California. He has helped initiate and internalize all complex procedures into LAMC's EP program including the more recent epicardial ablation and appendage closure program. He especially enjoys teaching fellows at daily "EP sign-out" teaching rounds reviewing complex EKG's and device tracings received throughout the day from cases in the SCal Region.

Upon graduating, he joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine with his research interest focusing on atrial fibrillation. Shortly after, he joined the Electrophysiology Division at KP LAMC and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at UCLA. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. He is interested in a broad range of research topics in clinical cardiac electrophysiology with multiple abstracts presented at the Heart Rhythm Society Scientific Sessions with EP fellows.
