Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity

Mission

We believe that equity, inclusion, and diversity are central to our mission to provide a world-class education to our Residents and Fellows. We aim to recruit and retain a diverse workforce of learners, faculty, and staff who train and work in a safe and inclusive environment. Using a framework that mitigates bias and identifies and addresses social determinants of health, our Residents and Fellows will be empowered to provide high quality, equitable care to the people and communities they serve.

Goals

• Promote cultural competence and diversity within Graduate Medical Education.
• Actively recruit under-represented minority medical students into residency programs and retain such residents into SCPMG.
• Encourage resident and faculty leadership development and mentorship in the areas of cultural awareness and diversity.
• Utilize strategies, including social media for networking and promotion of the Southern California residency and fellowship programs nationwide.
• Build strategic partnerships locally and nationwide to address cultural and diversity-related recruiting/pipeline issues of diverse cultural groups and underrepresented minorities

KPSC members are ethnically diverse; they represent more than 260 different ethnicities and speak about 118 different languages. According to the Southern California Association of Governments’ census data that compares growth from 2000 to 2010, the Hispanic population is now the largest ethnic group (45.25 percent) in Southern California, followed by Whites (33.39 percent), Asians (14.82 percent), and African Americans (6.53 percent).

KPSC is responding to this diverse population and their needs through its culturally responsive care programs and its Community Benefit program, which provided about $630 million in programs and other support in 2013 to improve the health of the communities we serve.

KP exists to provide affordable, high-quality health care services to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve. To further this mission, Kaiser Permanente extends its clinical care and total health focus through extensive medical and health services research programs and generous Community Benefit funding and services aimed at providing health care for vulnerable populations.

This is accomplished by addressing needs and priorities identified through local needs assessments that affect overall community health and the health care system.
